Ténèbre – Ultraviolet (Void+1 Recordings)

Void+1 continues to expand its catalogue through an exploration of concepts rooted in musical technique. Somewhere between futuristic music and sonic laboratory, the label invites listeners to discover different ways of shaping sound, while giving its artists a particularly fertile ground for experimentation.

Ténèbre is one of those artists. The French producer and sound designer, already known for breaking away from the conventions of industrial techno without losing any of its club efficiency, has just released Ultraviolet, a four-track EP built around the concept of “negative fields”.

In practical terms, the idea is to produce sound through subtraction rather than addition: removing instead of adding, by working with gaps, absences and patterns within the full frequency spectrum. It is an approach that almost runs counter to the usual instincts of music production. Much like a sculptor starting with a block of stone, the form emerges by removing material, to the point where emptiness itself becomes part of the composition.

Even though everything initially feels dense, abrasive and maximalist, the different elements remain perfectly distinct. Spaces open up within the distorted textures, sometimes filled by a delicate melody compressed between these different masses of sound.

“I often build a new record around a specific production constraint or technique. This time, it was built around the sonic concept of ‘negative fields’: carving out holes and patterns within the full audio spectrum rather than filling the blanks. The result is a maximalist, harsh sound at first glance, yet one born from a fundamentally reductionist approach to sound design. I find it interesting to apply this kind of restraint across a whole series of tracks, while allowing them to share the same sonic DNA as each one finds its own way through the noise.”
